At the edge of the Canadian Border, Glacier National Park and Waterton Lakes National Park are jointly the world’s first International Peace Park. The park was carved into miraculous forms by ancient glaciers, most of which have vanished with climate change, leaving behind turquoise glacial lakes. The park is home to a diverse array of wildlife including mountain goats, grizzly bears, moose, mountain lions, bald eagles, bighorn sheep, and bobcats. The area of the park was home to the Salish and Kootenai, Shoshone, Cheyenne, and most recently, the Blackfeet. It is considered a sacred place to many Native American nations. The land that became the park was reportedly sold to the United States while reserving hunting and gathering rights, but the terms of the treaty are still disputed by the Blackfeet Nation.
