Yosemite, California

Yosemite Valley in California’s Sierra Nevada mountains was carved by ancient glaciers into slick, towering cliffs and roaring waterfalls. It was protected by the U.S. Government in 1864, before the National Park Service was created. It is the homeland of the Ahwahnechee and the Miwok, but they were violently driven from the area during the Gold Rush. John Muir, famed naturalist and one of the symbolic founders of the National Parks, made his life’s mission to protect and preserve the Yosemite Valley.
